Matt Baird, 19, of Sudbury, who was granted a wish from Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island, chose to have the group make a $5,000 donation to Open Table in Maynard, Dec. 20, 2021. He has been a longtime volunteer with Open Table.

At first, Matthew Baird didn’t want to accept a wish. The 19-year-old freshman student at Davidson College in North Carolina was diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma in 2019 and finished treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in February 2020.

About a month ago, Bill Murphy planned to continue training for his fifth Boston Marathon. As he hustled down the stairs in his home in Grafton he missed the final two steps. Murphy fell and jammed his left leg, which ruptured his quad.

A torn quadriceps was not enough to stop one man from running the Boston Marathon virtually on Sunday. Bill Murphy completed 26.2 miles using crutches on the track at Worcester State University. He is raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Bill Murphy isn’t letting a torn quad stop him from completing the virtual Boston Marathon. “We are aren’t running, limping. You know, you still put a lot of weight on it, but it’s not too bad,” Murphy said. “It’s been getting better every day. So it's not too bad.”
