Liam's Wish Opens Up A World Of Possibilities
Liam’s health journey began at his mother’s twenty-week ultrasound, when his parents found out something wasn’t right with his heart. Liam would be diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, and at just three days old, would undergo his first open heart surgery. “Within hours after that, he had a cardiac arrest in front of my husband and I,” his mom Nicole says. “It changed me forever.” Liam would eventually undergo two more open heart surgeries, bringing the total to three for the four-year-old. “There were lots of appointments, echocardiograms, blood draws, EKGs, ER trips, specialists,” Nicole continues. “So many things for a little boy.”
Liam’s family would be introduced to the idea that he would be eligible for wish from a Facebook post. “We heard about Make-A-Wish prior to having Liam,” Nicole says. “We’ve always donated in the past, not realizing one day we’d be in these shoes. Liam couldn’t believe that he would be able to pick a wish just for him.” Liam’s fondest wish would find inspiration in one of his favorite toys. “He has a toy Peppa Pig camper, and he would ride all around the house with it,” Nicole share. “He says, “I want to be like Peppa!” - he wanted a camper just like her!”
Since Liam is unable to fly due to his diagnosis, a camper proved to be the perfect way to allow him to explore the world on his own terms. “We are able to have everything we need whenever we travel,” Nicole says. “We have access to bathe him, a refrigerator for his medications, heat and AC to keep his body temperature regulated and a safe place to sleep that can reduce the amount of germs. The camper allows us to have a home away from home on wheels whenever and wherever life takes us!”
More than just a wish to travel safely with his family, Liam’s parents saw his wish as an opportunity for the young boy to take back control of his life and make a decision for himself. “Liam can’t choose to stay home from school, he can’t choose to not go to his appointments or have surgeries,” Nicole says. “In order to thrive, he has to go through things he doesn’t necessarily want to do. Being able to have this wish gives him his own safe space to play and enjoy. It’s a great way for him to feel comfortable, have quiet time, and have conversations to plan for trips in the near future!”
